Meta Releases its most Powerful AI yet - Llama 3.1

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram in a recent post stated the release of its most powerful AI model yet. It is the newest version of its Llama models called Llama 3.1.

Unlike other companies’ closed model, this model released by Meta is open source and can be used by anyone to further develop it according to need.

A 92-page paper detailing the performance of Llama 3.5

Meta has always been vocal about its support for open-source AI and sees the closed-source models provided by commercial entities like Open AI, Anthropic, and others as a hindrance in AI development and advancements.

Meta also released a 92-page paper describing the training and the results & performance of the model.

“It’s very exciting,” says Percy Liang, an associate professor at Stanford University who tracks open-source AI.

If developers find the new model to be just as capable as the industry’s leading ones, including OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Liang says, it could see many moves over to Meta’s offering.

“It will be interesting to see how the usage shifts,” he says.

Giving away AI models for free

Unlike profit-oriented companies like Open AI, Google & Anthropic guarding their source code of AI within their tech locker, Meta has always been a pro at sourcing AI and wants to build a community of developers and users around the open-source products.

Meta has continuously given away its Llama AI to the public while continuously developing the next version which is better and powerful than its predecessors.

Dangers of Open Source AI models

While it sounds like an angel move to open-source AI models which takes lots of money and resources, it is also deemed dangerous. The main point here is that publicly released source codes can be tampered with and used to build various applications both good and bad. As it lacks any guardrails, some bad actors could potentially use this AI tool to execute in a harmful way.

Conclusion

While it is good news for AI developers that they now have a powerful AI model at their disposal to develop and build applications on top of. But for the governments and entities that are seeking to regulate AI to avoid any unfortunate events, it does sound like a nightmare.
